Games maker Electronic Arts has announced the release date for Spore, the long-awaited game from the creator of The Sims and SimCity.
The game will go on sale for Mac and PC on September 5 in Europe, while fans in North America and Asia will have to wait until September 7. Meanwhile, Nintendo DS and mobile phone versions of the game will be released worldwide on September 7.
Spore allows players to develop creatures from DNA and then help them evolve from a single-cell entity to an intelligent life form. Along the way, they can establish tribes, build civilisations and construct whole worlds.
Creative tools allow players to create their own creatures, vehicles, buildings and spaceships. So far, more than two million creatures having been uploaded to the Spore universe since EA launched a "Spore Creature Creator" editing programme in June.
Two versions of the game will be available - a standard release, priced at around £27, and a 'Galactic Edition' costing about £43 which includes a host of extras such as a 'Making of Spore' DVD, a National Geographic documentary DVD and a hardback book entitled 'The Art of Spore'.
