A 15-inch television using organic display technology will be launched by LG Electronics next month, the firm has said.
Better picture quality and lower power consumption are the benefits of active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AM-OLED) displays which are slimmer than popular LCD displays that require backlight units.
Self-glowing materials are used in AM-OLED screens. But these displays are costlier to make.
Despite OLED screens entering the high-priced phone market, costs to apply the technology for PCs and TVs are still discouraging.
LG said its new AM-OLED TV will be unveiled at the IFA 2009 consumer electric show in September in Berlin. It will be the largest OLED TV in the market so far.
The company, which is the world's second-biggest TV brand, said the set will be available overseas by next year.
Research firm DisplaySearch expects the OLED TV market will touch 2.33 million units in 2013. LG expects 320,000 units to be sold in 2011.
"We are planning to unveil a 40-inch grade (OLED) product in a not too distant future," LG said.
In 2007 Sony launched its first OLED , but has yet to follow this up with new models.
