Facebook Gets New Privacy Controls

Social networking site Facebook is trialling an updated publisher tool it claims will enable users to have more control over who can see their posts on the site.

Facebook says that the beta version of the privacy controls feature will allow users to configure settings to display certain content to just their confirmed friends, their friends and members of networks they belong to, "Friends of Friends" or everyone.

Olaoluwa Okelola, engineer for the networking site, explained in his blog: "You may have some posts you want to share with a wide audience, such as whom you voted for or how great the weather is today.

"Other times you may have more personal updates like your new phone number or an invitation to join you at your favourite restaurant for dinner that are meant for only close or nearby friends."

The improved privacy controls initially will be available only to a select group of users.

The move is an attempt by Facebook to increase security following complaints by users about the lack of privacy on the site.
